Panchayath History
Cultural & Historical Heritage
Kattakampal Grama Panchayat
A region rich in ancient legends, secular harmony, agrarian trade, and vibrant cultural traditions.
Origin & Local Legend
In ancient times, this region was covered with dense forests and rock formations. According to legend, one cow among the grazing herd would daily wander away from the group and shed milk naturally over a specific rock inside the forest.
Recognizing a divine spiritual presence in that rock, local villagers initiated prayers and sacred worship at the spot.
Terrain & Topography
The local landscape is uniquely characterized by elevated laterite hills combined with clay-rich low-lying paddy fields. It is situated approximately 12 kilometers east of the Arabian Sea coastline.
Located in the Thalappilly Taluk under Chowannur Block in Thrissur District, the region stands as an agrarian bridge between coastal and inland topographies.

Social History & Harmony
Historically situated at the northwestern border of the erstwhile Kingdom of Cochin, Kattakampal was surrounded by waterbodies on three sides (a peninsula), leading to early geographic isolation.
During the freedom struggle, despite attempts to polarize local political resistance like the Khilafat movement, the local citizens firmly preserved exemplary communal harmony and peaceful co-existence.
Pazhanji Market & Arecanut Trade
Pazhanji serves as the commercial hub of the region. Traditionally, green arecanuts were transported via country boats, processed into 'Kaliyakka', and exported across India.
Kattakampal remains one of the premier centers for arecanut production and agricultural processing in the country.
Traditional & Modern Healthcare
The region has a rich legacy of traditional medicine including Ayurveda, Siddha-Marma, and Unani practitioners.
In the 1930s, a leprosy hospital operated at Ainur Military Hill. Later in 1962, a modern Primary Health Centre was established near Pazhanji High School.
Transport & Canal Waterways
As a peninsular region, water transport was the sole mode of travel historically. Canals like the Conolly Canal connected to Chavakkad, and the Perumthodu canal linked Chittam to Biyyam/Ponnani.
With bridge building and road developments, water transport phased out by late 1988, establishing seamless road connectivity.
Places of Worship & Cultural Pooram
Kattakampal stands as a confluence of faiths, housing the ancient Kattakampal Shiva-Bhagavathy Temple, historic Christian churches built on elevated hills, and ancient mosques.
The iconic Kattakampal Pooram—featuring grand temple chariots (Theru), Kuthiravela, and Pandi Melam depicting the Kali-Dharika epic—is the flagship festival of the region.
Educational Legacy
Schooling expanded under Christian managements during British rule. Over a century ago, a government basic school was established at Pazhanji, later becoming a landmark High School.
With Pengamuck High School and the establishment of an Orthodox Church College in the 1970s, the region transformed into an eminent center for higher learning.
